How New Man Readers Helped Create the Hucka-Boom

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, is going into today's Iowa caucuses as the front-runner, and he credits his being there partly to New Man magazine.

At a fundraiser last week in Orlando, Fla., he told supporters that his recent surge came from his surprise second-place finish in the Aug. 11 Iowa Straw Poll. And that surprise came because New Man got behind him early last summer when he was merely an asterisk in the polls.

Did you see that article in the July/August issue of New Man? The cover proclaimed: "The Case for How Mike Huckabee Can Be the Next U.S. President." The sub headline read: "Why we think the former Arkansas governor (who espouses our values) could actually win.”

Before long people in Iowa were showing up at events with copies of New Man for Huckabee to sign. Supporters were writing us to get extra copies, which they distributed.

Huckabee told the crowd in Orlando that the New Man endorsement gave him creditability, not among the party elite, but among the Christians who thought maybe he could win when others were saying he didn't have a chance.

We think that we merely realized early what millions are now recognizing—that Huckabee is a very special leader. The former Baptist minister rose from the ranks to lead effectively in Arkansas for more than ten years, and has emerged as one of the most gifted communicators since Ronald Reagan showed up on the national scene in the 1970s.

Our article called him "one of our own" and touted him as “pro-life and the happily married father of three who is a former pastor. After being governor of Arkansas for 10 years, he may be the best-qualified candidate to become U.S. President in 2008.”

It seems the 2008 election is the widest open of any in more than 50 years in both parties. A lot is riding on how the candidates do in Iowa. How they do there partly determines how they will perform in the primaries which begin in New Hampshire next Tuesday followed by primaries in quick succession in South Carolina, Michigan and Florida, leading up to Super Tuesday on Feb. 5 in which 21 states will pick delegates for president.

If you missed the stories in New Man, you can click here to read what we wrote in July on "why we believe he can win" and even analyzed the others running this year.

If you have friends in Iowa, you may want to e-mail these articles to them. There is still time for them to attend one of the 1700 caucuses in the state tonight and cast their votes. Only about 120,000 people will vote in Iowa. It's cold and snowy and only the most committed attend the caucuses.

No matter the outcome of the caucuses tonight Huckabee has shaken up the election. If nothing else he's shown you can do well without multiplied millions of dollars. By contrast one of his opponents has outspent him in Iowa 20 to 1.

And Huckabee has shown that there is a strong core of voters who vote based on values and who wants a candidate who knows what he believes.

Our article surmised that a group of godly men could get behind him and create a buzz and help him to win. It apparently happened. Now let's continue to support him and help him make it all the way.

If you haven't given to Huckabee’s campaign, please do so. It's amazing how far he's gone with relatively little money. But now that he's a contender for the Republican nomination, he needs funds more than ever.

Even if National Treasure: Book of Secrets were not a sequel, the new film would still serve well as a stand-alone fable about the pursuit of wealth. Though the original revolved around Benjamin Gates (Nicholas Cage) protecting artifacts from modern-day pirates, the second film places its true treasure in family and reputation, an excellent illustration of Proverbs 22:1.
