Review: 10,000 BC
By Andrew Hyer
10,000 BC technically qualifies as an epic, since it is filled with danger, adventure, mystical powers, a love story and action scenes that include a mammoth-size battle at the end—all the typical things that a guy likes in a good epic movie. However, this epic had a fatal flaw. My wife actually ended up liking it more than me! It was a squeaky-clean movie: no gore, no bedroom scenes and no bad language. I’m not complaining about that. I actually appreciated it. But it made the movie feel a little sanitized. The relationships in the movie got more screen time than the battles. A few intense action scenes with some bloody battle wounds would have added something that was lacking.
The acting and dialogue were OK to sub-par, and there were random lines of poetry and lots of mysticism that came off as kind of cheesy. I found myself expecting more throughout the whole movie. I wanted more gripping scenes, more characters to believe in and a more realistic-feeling story.
Yet, on the whole it kept me engaged. It was entertaining and fun. And although it was cheesy, it was still somehow likeable. Don’t expect it to place among the great epics such as Braveheart or Gladiator, but it was still worth seeing.
