In Defense of Jamie Lynn Spears

I realize that the title of this post might be a little confusing. Why would the name Spears—Britney or otherwise—ever appear in a publication for men? This is New Man, after all, not Seventeen! But I make the unusual reference only to make a serious point.

On December 18, 2007 it was announced that 16 year-old Jamie Lynn Spears (sister of troubled pop sensation Britney Spears) was pregnant. The father was Jamie Lynn’s 18-year-old boyfriend.

Of course the news caused quite a media stir. It brought the issue of teen pregnancy into the public eye and many commentators decried the immoral and foolish behavior of the younger Spears sister, who herself was just emerging as an actor and singer.

There’s no doubt that Jamie Lynn’s behavior was unacceptable. She set a poor example for her peers and made a decision that would change the course of her life. But in all the excitement surrounding the scandalous news, something commendable was overlooked.

Jamie Lynn decided to keep her baby.

To most, her pregnancy would be a prime candidate for abortion. She had a public image to protect. A burgeoning career to defend. Not to mention youthful freedom to lose. She could have quietly arranged for an abortion and continued on with her privileged life. No one would have known. But instead she owned up to her actions and protected the life of her unborn child. I pray that other young women who make the same mistake will exhibit the same courage.

That's a great point, she should be commended for keeping her baby. I might feel more comfortable if she gave it up for adoption, though. The Spears clan doesn't have the best parenting record

Th outcry of the public wasn't because of inmorality or about her being too young to be having sex or if she was having sex outside of marriage. It was all about her keeping the baby-- that was the devastating choice for many. How could she do this? How is it going to affect her carrer? Will they keep her on the show's lineup? That was the tough decision. No one expects her to give up her "active sex life". Having sex and only 16 that's normal. Hey isn't that what every one else is doing? Now, getting pregnant and keeping the baby for some that was like, how could she?. Media was discussing "how Jamie a child herself can be raising a child" not the consequences of having sex out of marriage. Yes I'm happy she's keeping the baby I just hope she can turn this all into something that will really keep her as a role model and maybe confess as boldly as other things that Jesus is her Savior and true father.

My question is: where's the guy in all this? Isn't it a crime in California for an 18-year-old man (an adult) to have sex with a 16-year-old girl (a minor)? I'm not an attorney, but I think that's called statutory rape!
Kudo's to the girl for wanting to keep the baby. That's the right thing to do, but I think the whole other part to this story that hasn't even been touched, is the so-called boyfriend and his responsibilities and the consequenses for his actions.

I am the mother of a thirteen year old girl who got pregnant and is from a christian home. It devastated me. I felt at the time her life was totally over. She also kept and we helped raise the baby boy who is now five years old. She talked about marrying the father which they were much too young and have since broke up. God took that devastasion and turned it into joy because that little boy is the joy of my heart and his mother is now in college full time plus works full time. In no way do I feel Jamie should be permitted to marry at such a young age. What do you really know about what you want in a man or a woman at that age. They should be given more time for that. If they are meant to be together God will work it out for them, but don't go making two mistakes by jumping into a marriage that you are not ready for that could end up in divorce.
