I'm not sure how you could include George Bush and Jimmy Carter on your list as Christian men. Ok, they are men, but Christian?
Jesus said that if you know what is right, you are only building your house on sand. To know what is right and do it, then you are built on the Rock. Behavior matters. Anyone can be churched, say they are evangelical, and know some doctrine. Jesus said that behavior matters...it is what you do, or do not do. I know this is not what we are teaching in popular evangelical culture, but it is what Jesus said, and what the Bible teaches. And we all know that we can't have two masters. Neither Bush nor Carter show Biblical Christian behavior.
Thanks for you comment. But aren't you overstating things a little? "Neither Bush nor Carter show Biblical Christian behavior." What about Carter's extensive humanitarian work? Is that not biblical behavior?
I'm not going to defend each person on the list, but denying they are Christians is going too far.
Also, I agree that Jesus emphasizes behavior, he also clearly commands corrent belief and doctrine. I know there's been a backlash against belief-only Christianity, but to put all the focus on behavior would be a mistake. Going either way too far is wrong. As C.S. wrote, falsehood comes into the world in pairs of opposites.
With the exception of what Billy Graham said in days of late about salvation, he has always had my respect, because he is a man on a mission, and nothing would dissuade him, and he nothing would change his passion. He is a man who both heard God's calling and faithfully stuck to it. Not many men like that!
The question was, 'What man do you most admire?' It doesn't ask about his Christian state. Presumably, they are ALL Christian.
I most admire President Bush. I don't agree with everything he says or does but his strength in being pleasant when others are attacking him, is clearly Christ in him - in my opinion. Perhaps, because I see that as one of my personal weaknesses is why I admire him. It's easy to be kind when everything comes up roses but when the whole world attacks you, well, that's another story. He has been in the fire since/before his election and he is always calm and gentle but strong. That's incredible and nothing more than Christ in him.
Jerry M of Jacksonville, Dr. Billy Graham has the greatest respect from all people, his years of serving the Lord with the greatest of integrity! Praise the Lord for Dr. Graham.
I do not feel some of the people you have on your list are Christ like. What about Jimmy Carter? He is against Israel God's chosen and many other things. People like Tony C. preaches a false doctrine. A christian is some one who follows the teachings of Christ. This term Christian is used very lightly these days. I do feel George Bush tries hard to life a christian life. Is sad to judge when we have not walked in his shoes.
I understand that many of you do not see the man you most admire on this list. We wanted to choose men who were prominent enough so that all readers would recognize them. We also realize that some of our choices were somewhat controversial, but we were trying to include a broad range of Christian men. If you don't see the name of the man you most admire in this poll, please post a comment telling us who you would choose and why.
While I chose Billy Graham, I also highly recognize President George W. Bush for his knowdedication of beginning each morning in Scripture reading and study; and seeking the lord's guidance in his decisions. And I also admire Mike Huckabee for not only his faithfulness as a Pastor, but in the primarys, he has let his Christianity be known in his walk, and with his word. He says it like it is!
I would have to say, from this list, Tony Dungy, for the fact that he is employed in an organization of young, impressionable, sometimes not so mature minds and he has the awesome opportunity and responsibility to teach, coach and be a mentor to them for everyday life. Also, because he is all too willing to witness and profess the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ even in the NFL.
By their friuts you shall know them says the scripture. I have seen the fruits of Dr. Billy Graham, he is a man of integrity... his works are clearly obvious...faithful to His call. The Light of Christ clearly visible in Him. What a Stalwart of a Man Of God He is.. Selah!!!
You should have a fill in the blank space to vote for other more admirable christians. The man I most admire is Dr.Ron Paul.He is a true Christian & an the only honest 2008 canidate. He gave up a lucritive ob/gyn practice to help save our country from the unconstitutional federal reserve bank & the liberal republicans & democrats, inluding many who falsely claim to be christians to deceive voters & magazines to get their support!Yes,Mike Huckabee included. He is one of four 2008 canidates listed as Judicial Watch's Top Ten Most Corrupt Politicians for 2007.Ron Paul is the ONLY pro-Constitution canidate,& he doesn't need to wear his religion on his shirt sleeve. You can tell a good tree by it's fruit,& he has bore good fruit, consistently for years. One only needs read his writings to see what a great patriot, genius,& CHRISTIAN that God has given us to choose for our leader if we are wise enough to to so, despite the media's bias & hit-pieces against him.He has more military support & money than any canidate!!That alone should be enough!
With some two billion Christians in the world, the list seems kind of short! However, of those listed, I guess Billy Graham is most admired by me. George Bush has sought to free people around the globe through worldly means (which is certainly to be admired) but Billy Graham has had a hand in freeing millions through faith in Christ Jesus. There is something to admire in each of those you mention but, for sheer numbers affected in an eternal way, Billy Graham wins.
I voted for Tony Dungy because he is a man who, while working for the No-Faith-League, has maintained his integrity and character. He is a quiet, humble, gentle man who has every reason in the world to be arrogant, obnoxious and annoying. It is wonderful to see someone like him exhibiting Godly character in the un-Godly world in which he works. Thank you, Mr. Dungy...Go Colts!
I appreciate your magazine and the many articles on here to spread the Fame of Jesus. But, my Question for New Man Magazine is why is Rick Warren even on this list? There are many concerns many of us have about him teaching false doctrine to the masses. I encourage New Man to examine it and even consider doing an article about him to warn The Church about him and his teaching. We have a responsibility to care for our flock. And you have much more influence than I do.
The Christian man I admire most is not on this list. He is a man whose money, position, physical stature and visage does not demand notice. He is a man who walks in love impacting not just his family but his community where he lives worldwide. He may be the janitor of a school or church, he may be a CEO but he is one who gives a glimpse of zoe life and unselfish love for all to see. He does not recognize himself as a leader or teacher yet he exudes Jesus.
All will be surprised to see men and women like this receiving the warmest embrace from Jesus...
Billy Graham has my vote for his committment to his calling and for touching my spirit with the Word as well as millions of others.
Thanks for the posting of everyone and thanks for starting such an interesting discussion.
Boy howdy, at my place on the journey I'm really trying to embrace "judge not lest ye be judged". With that from a point of admiration I'd say Tony D is a model I could aspire to.
These men are are an interesting bunch but they in no way compare to men like Rolland Baker and others like him who have lived among the poor or in the bush seeking souls. Living in the comfort of the USA and being famous because you chat with the President and hold crusades is nice but training people to trust Jesus, die for the cross, win Muslimns heal the sick and raise the dead is a much more full expression of Christianity. Should have made room for some write-ins.
Although I believe Billy Graham is probably the most admired man on the list I think the list needs to be revised to include Christian men who are relevant today. I'm sure Graham has been on lists for probably about 60 years now. I think Lou Engle (a man with a Call) should be included.

Let us have a list of names so that we can judge whether or not people are Christian. We just love that sort of thing.

Why did only one current presidential candidate make the list? There are other Christians running, such as Barack Obama, John McCain, and John Edwards.
I chose Billy Graham because of all of the men listed he lived out his faith the loudest.

Where did this list originate? Why are others not on the list?
How do I vote if the man I admire the most is not on the list?

Well - the Son of Man/Jesus Christ - of course is my favorite & most cherished (i love HIM very very much - imagine that)!!!
