Clean Hotels...Morally Speaking
You've been there. Bored on a business trip. Alone in your hotel room. You flip through the channels. No good games. No cool movies.
Then you browse the hotel's film menu. The "adult" list catches your eye. Provocative descriptions and scantily clad women promise to fulfill your every desire.
Home is a thousand miles away. No one would know.
It's the moment of truth. What do you do?
Hopefully you resist. Unfortunately, many men do not. Often they cave in to the temptation and view porn.
According to a CBS special, at the big hotel chains—Hilton, Marriot, Hyatt, Sheraton and Holiday Inn—50 percent of guests view adult films on in-room pay-per-view television systems. Fifty percent!
If you find that statistic startling, this one is downright tragic: xxxchurch.com, a ministry that helps men fight porn addiction, reports that hotel porn rentals increase during ministry conventions. That means that some pastors are viewing hotel porn at a higher rate than the general public!
Bottom line? If pastors fall prey to temptation, so can we. That’s why when you check into a hotel, you need to fend off temptation before walking into your room.
One friend of mine does that by going to the front desk to request that adult films be blocked from his room.
An even better way that I read about recently is to make reservations through cleanhotels.com—a network of lodging facilities that do not offer in-room pornographic movies. I don’t usually plug specific companies, but in this case I’ll make an exception. Before you go on your next business trip, please consider visiting cleanhotels.com. No one is above temptation and taking precautions often makes the difference between victory and defeat.

Hi Drew,
I wanted to comment on the Tony Compolo article about the Red Letter "words of Jesus", so I will do so here. I won't be long winded but I will say that I am very disturbed the train of thought of Mr. Compolo.
Here is my question to Mr. Compolo.
In the Red Letter sections of the Bible...is that where Jesus is speaking...or where Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John write about Jesus speaking?
Why should I trust Luke [who was not an eye witness of the resurrected, glorified Jesus] more then I would his missionary travelling companion, the Apostle Paul...who was an eye witness of the resurrected Lord?
The Apostle Peter tells us that the Spirit of Christ was working through the Old Test prophets...and the Spirit of Christ was also working through the writers of the New...it should all be red lettered if we are going to say that the words of Jesus are to be in red...remember 2 Tim 3:16...all means all.
Keep up the good work Drew. God bless you. Dale Callahan
Excellent article on this problem.
I spent many years fighting this particular temptation, often to losing results.
A couple of years ago I read about cleanhotels.com and booked a room through their service. It was easy to do, and when I arrived at the hotel, no porn!
It's really frustrating that so many large chain hotels are contributing to this crippling problem of pornography. It can destroy your life.
Other ideas I've actually used - removing the batteries from the remote and tossing them out. Others have even removed the TV from the room. While this seems extreme, giving in to sin has eternal consequences. I'd rather "radically amputate" a stronghold than be meek, thinking my own strength will be sufficient, then capitulating the first night.
I wholeheartedly endorse cleanhotels.com as a viable option over those chains that elect to offer these garbage PPV options.
I agree with Mr. Callahan regarding the inspiration of scripture. In truth, the entire Bible is the word of God. Christ Himself being the word, is the speaker and mouthpiece for God, and as such, has been the revealer to God's chosen prophets in both testaments. It is ALWAYS Him speaking.
Interestingly enough, I have found some reliable sources that John was considered the theologian of the early church, and not the later and more systematic Paul.
Blessings on you.
How terribly disappointing to read Mr. Campolo's comments in your most recent online piece. To suggest any part of Scripture carries more weight than another is wholly unBiblical. His use of Jesus' comments about the Moses passage is simply a travesty. The beauty of Scripture is our ability to measure the parts against the whole in order to avoid heresy. Mr. Campolo, a man whose heart is often in the right place, is merely manipulating Scripture to advance an aggressive political agenda; the very thing he accuses the religious right of doing. As hurtful as the public faces of the religious right can be, Mr. Campolo's response is even more dangerous because he's placed himself above Scripture, choosing which parts to honor and which ones to diminish. Very disappointing and wrongheaded turn from a Godly man. A terrible disservice to the Kingdom!
If that many pastors are struggling with porn, what other secret sins are going on while they are away or at home. Wish there were a "drug test" the church could do, to remove them from the pulpit, since they don't have enough fear of the Lord to do so themselves!
