Pray for Obama

The Presidential Prayer Team, a wonderful ministry headed up by John Lind, recently launched a 77-Day Prayer Initiative to get Christians to pray for a peaceful transition of power and for the future of America under the leadership of President-elect Barack Obama.

“Our responsibility as Christians is … to pray for those God has placed in authority over us, interceding for their wisdom, insight and protection,” Lind said. “It is our joy and honor before God to do this. We have been preparing for a new administration for more than two years and are excited to lead our members into a new season of prayer.”
I couldn’t agree more. Regardless of your political affiliation or your feelings about how the election turned out, we need to pray for the incoming president. The 77-Day Prayer Initiative should give you some good ideas about how and what to pray for.

PRAYER FOR LIB DEMS IN POWER

I TIMOTHY 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior;

:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Ponder the meaning of Romans 13 more carefully ...

Does Romans 13 really refer to our secular government, or the “rulers” of the church? note that in later verses this passage specifically names “ministers of God”. There are a number of problems with applying these verses to our secular governmen.

In the last election I was at peace that it was God’s will for McCain and Palin to be elected. I was still at peace after the election about the way that I had been praying, praising and thanking Him for this. After they lost I prayed and searched the Word and consulted Pastor Joan for the an explanation. I feel that the answer is that this was God’s will, but God gave people freedom of choice and too many of the voters were deceived.

Then you have the contradiction that if the secular government decrees something that is against the Word of God, it is certainly not pleasing to God for us to obey that command.. Consider the many passages in the Old Testament where a sinful king led the people to sin against the Lord.

Finally, you have to question whether God ordains government officials who are pushing ungodly agendas.

In short, there is something going on here that is much more complex than simply a blanket instruction to fall into line

ROMANS 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

God doesn’t “ordain” evil or anyone who advocates evil!

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

How are we to pray for people in authority who appear to be unbelievers?

As I study and pray on this, one thing becomes ever clear. We must pray for our nation as never before. and stand in the full armor of God.

i THESSALONIANS 5:8 1Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19 Quench not the Spirit.

20 Despise not prophesyings.

II CHRONICALS 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

And we are to seek discernment and the mind of the Lord, recognizing that we are in the last days and that evil shall rise up against us.

21 Prove ( test, ciscern and examine) all things; hold fast that which is good.

MALACHI l 3:18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

II TIMOTHY 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

1. We are to be humble and pliable before the Lord, praying that His attitude be our attitude.

COLOSSIANS 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of
mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

1CORINTHIANS 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

2. We pray for love for them in the same way that God loves them.

This is not love for them the way the are currently behaving. God loved us when we were yet sinners, but He didn’t love the way we were, He loved our “essence”. We must ask the Lord to open our eyes that we will see them as He does.

ROMANS 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

EPHESIANS 3: 17 – 21
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, that ye being rooted and grounded in Love...
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, and to know the Love of Christ which passeth knowledge that y might be filled with all the fulness of God.

ROMANS 5:5
the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us...

I JOHN 4:15
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in
God. (God is LOVE)

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that
dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God (love) in him.

PHILLIPIANS 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in
knowledge and in all judgment;

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without
offense till the day of Christ;

11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory
and praise of God.

3. We are to pray for their salvation if the person in authority appears to be an unbeliever.

We must pray against the satan’s spirit of blindness and intercede for them that their eyes will be opened.

However,
I generally believe that we should pray something once, then repeatedly praise and thank the Lord for his answer to prayer. In this case, it is always His will for a person to come to Him,

II PETER 3:9 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

However, the person may choose not to. at least not in this time frame.

II PETER 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

So, in this prayer we cannot anticipate with pleasure and certainty that the person will come to the Lord, CERTAINLY NOT AT THIS TIME unless we have spent much time seeking the Word of the Lord on this particular person.

My thought at this point of study and prayer on this, is that pray for Obama, Pelosi and Reed’s salvation, then praise and thank the Lord that He will draw them to him. Then at the same time seek the Word of the Lord regarding each of them. If the Lord give us the word that they are not
going to come to him, OR at least not in the immediate time frame, then we must stand against them.

And at the same time continue to praise the Lord that He is drawing them to him! Their salvation in Christ is more important than their actions today.

JOHN 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

4. We are to rebuke satan IN JESUS NAME and stand in his way commanding satan and his minions to cease and desist from using that person in authority for evil. The person in authority who does not appear to be walking in Christ, is not the real problem. It is satan!

EPHESIANS 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places.

EPHESIANS 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

JAMES 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God.

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
5. We must pray in His Will.

The above prayers are certainly scriptural and therefore in His will. Beyond this type of prayer, we must pray for guidance as to how to pray and pray in the Holy Spirit.

ROMANS 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit,....

JEREMIAH 7:23 ...., Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: ....

EXODUS 8:10 Be it according to thy word ...

JAMES 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

EPHESIANS 6: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, ...

JOHN 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

JAMES 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6. Recognize ( without being judgmental) that if the person is an unbeliever, the promises of the Word to born again Christians that are living in Jesus do not automatically apply.

I believe this means that simply to pray for that person’s protection based on our own good will is pointless. ... nothing but religious touchy feely stuff. And I don’t feel that it is scriptural to pray for “divine health” for them. Divine health is a blessing under the New Covenant.

For example, Psalm 91 does not apply to anyone who is not “dwelling in the secret place” of God. Promises of protection are not simply like some charm bracelet. There are Biblical rules and conditions. In the Old Testament people could only expect these promises to apply if they obeyed all of the Law. Under the New Covenant, we must be born again and centered (abiding) in Christ. I think even a born again Christian must walk in love and faith and fill himself with the Word, believe the promises and claim them in order for the promises to consistently apply.

So before we can pray for that person’s protection, we must pray for the Lord’s will in that situation. It may be that it is His will to pray for protection of an unbeliever in a specific situation, placing ourselves between that person and satan.

PSALM 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty.

PSALM 34:7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

7. Thank and praise the Lord that He has promised to restore righteous leaders to our land.

ISAIAH 1:25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take
away all thy tin:

26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counselors as at the beginning:
afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.

EXODUS 18:21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear
God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of
thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

PROVERBS 29:16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the
righteous shall see their fall.

8. Recognize that the Blessing is given freely to all those who are born again into the New
Covenant... not to those who have ot accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord!

I don’t think it is appropriate, productive or scriptural to pray these blessings
over unbelievers.

EPHESIANS 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty...

JEREMIAH 17:7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

17:8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

II SAMUAL 22:2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence.

9. Recognize that God can direct Obama and Pelosi and Reed even if they don’t want Him to do so. This is not the same as praying for them to “have wisdom”. In effect, we can pray that God will direct them and control them.

PROVERBS 21:1 Pro 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

PROVERBS 5:16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

I hate to tell you this anonymous at 4:17 but this is not you own personal blog so stop hogging all the space. It is also very uncool to use God's word to justify your bitterness and unwillingness to follow His directions to pary for leaders. Many decievers such as yourself have tried this trick.

You need to get into a good Bible-believing church so you can be taught and you need to be still and listen to God's still small voice. Its obvious from your writing that you are more concerned with being political than righteous so you can't hear him right now.

Your root of bitterness has got to be pulled out. The Saviour can help and I wil be in prayer for you.

I have been praying for our leaders and all of us. I have never seen so many Christians behave so badly. It has left me very distressed.

I agree, we need to pray for our president, whether or not his views match our own, his party is the same as ours or his beliefs are biblical or not. I am praying.

Thanks for reminding us to uplift the president in our prayers so that God can lead him in His own ways. Ways of our Lord are straight and not crooked. Raise up ye men and women of prayer and fulfil your holy calling. Amen

Yes,we are to pray for our leaders, as written by the Apostles. But exactly what do you think they themselves prayed for, towards those who killed their brethren?

And it was the same Peter and John, who also said that they would obey God rather than man.

What do you think the Living God would have us to pray towards those who slaughter the unborn?

What do you intend to pray for the Obamas of the world when and if they try to surpress the word of God?

If you truly want to pray for corrupt leaders, maybe we should look at how Jesus dealt with those (higher powers) in Matt. 23.

I will pray for their salvation, but beyond that . . . .?

Chris,
Keep going, brother! You are right on. I just signed up for the Presidential Prayer Team this week. Everything changes when we have a fresh encounter with God's extraordinary love and mercy. There is just no telling what our prayers for such an experience will bring to pass in the life of our new president. If we don't pray for him, who will? Who can?

A few bloggers have suggested that Obama is only worthy of our prayers for salvation, no more.

I'm curious, where does this idea about "salvation only" prayer originate? Wasn't it not our Lord Jesus who instructed us to pray even for our enemies (Mt 5:43-48)? And wasn't it again Jesus who prayed for people who were sick and under spiritual oppression?

Did Jesus Christ, friend of sinners, only restrict his prayers to those who believed? If this were the case, no one ever would have received prayer to begin with.

I myself can testify that the Lord was very gracious to answer many of my prayers before I ever came to a place of surrender to Him. It was His tender mercies that drew me to Himself and now keep me drawing closer to Him. I have also as a Christian prayed for unbelievers needs and God has graciously answered those prayers.

"Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?" (Romans 2:4)

"I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain." (Galatians 2:21)

Peace,

Thank you for asking us to pray for President-elect Obama. Let us also pray for all of them in his cabinet, and our country. We need to pray that GOD would break every demonic stronghold in this land. We need to ask GOD to help us use HIS Word in the SPIRIT OF LOVE and WISDOM. Lets not forget to pray for our soldiers that are fighting in the wars, and the people here in America who have lost their homes, jobs, and money.
We as Christians must do our part to win lost souls. We need one another as never before...Now let us PRAY....with the SPIRIT OF LOVE and understanding.

Somebody grown up needs to remove the blog "anonymous" at 4:17am. Not only is this person a blog hog--they are a certified nut. And we have had enough of these crazies in the last couple of months to last a lifetime.
These "Christians" do much to drive people (Christian and non-Christian) away and have much to answer to God for.
Where, I ask you, is the love?

I've got a verse for you:

"John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you."

Yes this explains it all,

"John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you."

That was the gospel Jesus Christ preached in the course of His earthly ministry. My heart bleeds when some people who should be followers Christ (i.e chrsitains), exemplifying His teachings in deed, hide under the cloak of religion to judge others who do hold divergent views with them.

Christains are called into the ministry of watchmen over nations. Their obligation should keep them on their knees pleading with God until they effect positive changes in the world. In otherwards they are to engage in constructive and not destructive activity.

Whoever is using the word of God as platform to justify his evil selfish motives must note that someday he would stand before God and account for his evil deeds.

This is the certified nut.

Apologies for posting twice .. technical difficulty.

The "4:19 am" blog was not intended to offend.

Yes we are to love and pray for even our enemies. But we must pray in God's will, in humility and in accordance with His Word.

The following is the condensed version of my comments. The rest of that blog was scripture.

Ponder the meaning of Romans 13 more carefully ...

God doesn’t “ordain” evil or anyone who advocates evil!

How are we to pray for people in authority who appear to be unbelievers?

As I study and pray on this, one thing becomes ever clear. We must pray for our nation as never before. and stand in the full armor of God.

And we are to seek discernment and the mind of the Lord, recognizing that we are in the last days and that evil shall rise up against us.

1. We are to be humble and pliable before the Lord, praying that His attitude be our attitude.

2. We pray for love for them in the same way that God loves them.

3. We are to pray for their salvation if the person in authority appears to be an unbeliever.

And at the same time continue to praise the Lord that He is drawing them to him! Their salvation in Christ is more important than their actions today.

4. We are to rebuke satan IN JESUS NAME and stand in his way commanding satan and his minions to cease and desist from using that person in authority for evil. The person in authority who does not appear to be walking in Christ, is not the real problem. It is satan!

5. We must pray in His Will.

6. Recognize ( without being judgmental) that if the person is an unbeliever, the promises of the Word to born again Christians that are living in Jesus do not automatically apply.

7. Thank and praise the Lord that He has promised to restore righteous leaders to our land.

8. Recognize that the Blessing is given freely to all those who are born again into the New
Covenant... not to those who have ot accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord!

9. Recognize that God can direct Obama and Pelosi and Reed even if they don’t want Him to do so. This is not the same as praying for them to “have wisdom”. In effect, we can pray that God will direct them and control them.
-------

Yes God's love flowing through us - the born again Christians - is our command and should be our first priority.

Prayer is a wonderful thing. It is the vehicle for talking with God through Jesus, for worshipping, for hearing Him. Remember that Jesus told us to come boldly to the throne of grace for we are His body here on earth.

Prayer is also how we obtain victory over obstacles that satan puts in our paths and the way we receive the many promises of the Bible.

God has promised to answer our prayers. However, like all of His promises, there are rules and conditions, including:

1. Prayer must be in His will in order to be heard and answered by Him. Prayers that are simply kind and well meaning and Christian like are nothing more than religious prattle.

2. We must pray in Love.

3. Our prayers must be consistent with His Word.

4. Jesus instructed us to refrain from simply repeating our request. Once the petition is before Him we are to praise and thank Him for answering the prayer.

We are assured that our prayer is in His will and consistent with His Word if we can find the specific issue in scripture.

For examples:

1 The salvation of another

2. The healing of our nation.

3. Restoring of righteous leaders for our nation.

4. That leaders of our nation will be controlled by God.

5. That God’s love will flow through us.

If we cannot find the specific issue in His Word, we must seek His will in prayer. This is true even if the prayer is very well meaning and sounds wonderful.

For example, we are instructed to pray for our government. However, I believe that we must spend time before the Lord in order to know HOW to pray for them in any specific situation.

Thank you for that article I Timothy 2:1 & 2 tells that as believers we are to pray for all men and all leaders. Verse two b answers that question by stating that we might lead a quiet and peaceble life in all godliness and honesty. This means the body of Christ has the mandate and the authority to bring about order in a nation and world not a particular political party.

This has nothing to do with politics!!!!!! If you believe it does, then we should be praying that there aren't any people like you in positions of authority. God had a lot to do with Obama becoming president, and he is just the man we need right now to help us, as a nation, repair the damage evil has done to our country for nearly a decade. I respect and admire the new President of the United States of America as much as my own father. We, as men, absolutely should pray for our leaders. For their safety, judgement, and for them to think with wisdom. And believe me. I belong to the largest men's christian fellowship in the state of Nevada, and we are praying for the new president and all who surround him!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, please know that Jesus told us in His Gospels that if someone is for Him he is not against Him. Ask yourself first, are you for Christ or against Him? Then, if you are for Him, pray that all others will be for Him. If any president doesn't declare Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior under what rule will we be? Jesus desires ALL to come to Him and be saved, therefore, let us pray for all living past presidents, current presidents and future presidents to become saved, if they are not. Do not loose site, however, Jesus is first, we follow Him, not a president. Jesus is ruler over all, live in peace with Him and see how your life will change.

Most importantly from a Christian perspective, if you believe in the Bible...(1) Pray for Obama to repent & receive Christ as his personal savior. Currently Obama believes same sex marriage and abortion on demand through the 9th month are acceptable - both an abomination to God(govt funding for abortions in the US & the world) out of our tax dollars. (2) For God to reveal to our leaders any terrorist attacks planned against our nation or people and the ability to stop them before they occur. (3) For the peace of Jerusalem (they are the focal point in the middle east & God has his eye on them).

Blog Hogging is more than an issue of verbosity and to many words. It reflects an undisciplined understanding as to the nature of dialogue versus pontification. These blogs are for the purposes of encouragement, expression, and hopefully galvanizing a Christian response to life. Isn't there something in the Old Testament about taking a chill pill.
