Jesus vs. Santa

I love Christmas. I love the family, the food and the fun. I even like the parts that most guys hate, including the shopping (gasp!).

But in recent years I keep hearing something I don’t like during this season: a cultural war. It seems that Christmas time sparks the flames of political correctness and its detractors more than any other time of the year. Fights over the words we can use to greet each other, the stories we can tell our children and the songs we can sing in public seem to hit the news every other day. It seems like I see the ACLU’s name in more stories during the month of December than I do all year long (and that’s not a good thing).

I understand the issues. Christmas brings out a lot of cultural baggage in this country because, other than Jewish people and Kwanzaa-ites, pretty much everybody celebrates it in spite of the fact that it’s a Christian holiday. Then, when those same people miss the real point of the season, we Christians get upset with them. We look at Santa as a rival for Jesus, and the battle seems to get more heated every year.

It’s a shame that this war always pops up at a time when love, grace and forgiveness have historically been celebrated. I’m all for educating people as to the real reason for the season and greeting others with a Merry Christmas instead of a Happy Holidays, but I would beg everyone who is a follower of Christ to also show as much love and grace as possible.
Fiercely bashing anyone who uses the phrase “Seasons Greetings” is not going to help people understand the point of Christmas time. However, living like Christ and reaching out in love to those who are hurting and in need of help will get that point across without any need for words at all, whether they are PC phrases or not.

Good points, Chris. I have thought the same myself. It's gotten so heated that as a writer, you now think twice about using the word 'holidays' as a second reference, wondering if you'll get blasted for alternating words in your stories.

I understand your point, but the attacks on Christmas are very real. I don't see as much backlash (yet) against Thanksgiving and wishing someone a "Happy Thanksgiving" even though the day was created as a chance to reflect and thank our Creator for His belssings. When we back down from celebrating the reason for Christmas and wishing each other Merry Christmas, we have lost the fight.

Vince -

All due respect, which "fight" ??

No one is stopping you from celebrating the reason for Christmas in your home and church, or wishing people Merry Christmas.

If you say your Christian and still see the need to publicly display your faith on your sleeve, you may want to reexamine your motives.

Publicly displaying your faith won't convert anyone. Actually, Jesus even had a few words for those who liked to stand on corners proclaiming how holy they were.

Steven,

I find it interesting you were able to glean all that information about me from my response. You assume I display my faith on my sleeve as well as publicly displaying my faith in order to convert others. As a matter of fact, I do neither of the things of which you accuse me.

The fight is the fight from secular progressives imposing their beliefs on me/us. We lose the fight if we are hesitant to say Merry Christmas or acknowledge the holiday.

Merry Christmas.

Vince,

I understand your point about secular progressives. But the world, secularism and an amoral society are not what I believe are our greatest threats.

I'm really curious, what does it mean to you when you said we can't "back down" ??

Are you saying if a Walmart clerk wishes you "happy holidays" you will jump at the chance to tell the no-good politically correct pansy MERRY CHRISTMAS?

Oh the love of the season. To be more charitable. :)

I can handle seasons greetings and happy holidays. What I really don't like is Santa. My children all know that there is no Santa and that Jesus is the reason for Christmas. They know we are celebrating the birth of Jesus and why that is something to celebrate. My problem with Santa is people have made him a god. They have made him omniscient and omnipresent. No one is either of those things except for God. Then they put up little santa figures in and around their home. Sounds like an idol to me!

Hmmmm, I think I can see both sides, and where the fault line lies. For me, I make sure I say MERRY CHRISTMAS, no matter what anyone else says. I think as Christians that should be expected of us. As for the Walmart clerk, she may be prohibited from (as an employee) saying anything other than Happy Holidays. So I won't correct her, or anyone else for that matter, but if *I* am "corrected", THEN I will vigorously defend my Merry Christmas. -Wilfred T Ruck
