The Big Vacation in the Sky

So I'm moving in a week and a half. This means that for the foreseeable future my life will be consumed by boxes. I will be hunting for boxes, taping up boxes, packing boxes, stacking boxes, asking random passersby on the street if they know where more boxes are, and finally moving all those boxes onto a massive boxy vehicle that no one in his right mind should let me drive.

Why all the boxes you ask? Because my wife and I are pack rats. This means we have objects that we will willingly pack up and move, and the only time we will see those objects again is the next time we pack up and move. (What? You expect us to throw out a perfectly good wire even though we have no idea what it plugs into? We might need that!) While this makes the moving experience more time-consuming, it also makes it a lot more fun because we rediscover those things we have kept even with a remote sense of sentimental value.

Looking back over yearbooks, old ticket stubs and forgotten picture frames made me realize how many people I've known whom I will never see again. It's a sad thought, unless the person was a Christian. If he or she was, it should be a joyful thought because I know I am are going to see this person in heaven.

Heaven is one of those subjects that I feel gets totally underplayed by Christians in America (and I myself am completely guilty). We are so busy and so focused on what's going on right now that we are missing out on the fact that we have a guaranteed paradise awaiting us at the end.

Think about how much you look forward to a good vacation. You plan it, make preparations, think about it when you get bored at work, and talk about it excitedly with the people you are going with. Now imagine that you are going on the best possible vacation that exists, that it will literally never end, and that every Christian you've ever known is going to be there partying with you. That's heaven. It's like a honeymoon and a retirement and an awesome family reunion all wrapped up in one.

We should be celebrating this every day. We should be so joyful that we have this to look forward to. We should be planning for it and making preparations. Compared to it, everything else in life pales. All our cars, houses and toys look completely lame because we can't bring them with us.

Here's what C.S. Lewis says on the subject in "The Weight of Glory," his classic essay: "Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased."

Try to remember the big vacation in the sky awaiting you at the end as you walk through this week. Don't forget about how awesome it's going to be. If we can learn to live in light of it, we will make different decisions. We will spend our money differently. We will look at struggles differently. We will talk to people differently because we will want to look for every opportunity to invite them on our vacation. And we will certainly live life more joyfully.

Now, if I could only find some more boxes ...

Thanks for the wonderful reminder of our promise in eternity. I agree it is so easy to be distracted by all the "stuff" around us and forget the real treasure of heaven. (Matt 6:19-21)

Heaven is going to be magnificent. We will see colors we've never seen, hear sounds we've never heard and feel love indescribably sweet and rich. (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Ah, deep breath. Come Lord Jesus.

I am saddened by the fact that you a professed follower of Christ would allow yourself to be in bondage to things of minimal value. But maybe your article is the first step towards repentance. Jesus told us that the Kingdom of Heaven is within us so why would you look elsewhere to find what is in you. Read John 3:1-13, it also comes across as self-serving when you propose the idea of what's in it for me. It makes more sense to me that we become Heaven so as to affect change now and equip, transform and make disciples so the body of Christ grows into his fullness. No condemnation intended.

So Anonymous - if God were opposed to having "things" why would he be building me a MANSION that has an address on a street of GOLD with gates of PEARL? If I were not to have "things" I would not need a mansion. Shame on you for mocking someone who likes "things". Be sure YOUR SINS will find YOU out!

Unfortunately some people have a limited understanding of spiritual matters and are so legalistic, religious and self-absorbed that they don't see the idolatry that is in their lives. The bible teaches that anything of value that you place before God is idolatry. Why would you choose to be enslaved to a thing that has no eternal value and profits you nothing. God looks at the intent of the heart not the actual item. I'm sorry that some have no futher revelation of Kingdom understanding than to think you'll have a physical mansion. For a better understanding read what Jesus said to the women at the well, hope this helps.

Wow, guys! I think context is very important w.r.t what Chris is sharing. I don't think it has anything to do with the THINGS or the BOXES, it just made him think of something else more profound. I think he's using a picture story that mostly anyone can relate to (a metaphor as such; moving house changes your whole life. Going to heaven will certainly be a BIG move between this world and eternity. It is most certainly the concept of 'packing up' because you won't be able to take ANYTHING material from this world with you. However, it is glorious to look forward to spending eternity in God's presence. I think we should keep perspective of living life on earth to the full (and to honour God in all things), and also realizing that, at the same time, we are just passing through, as God also tells us. This world is not forever, but I don't believe God is offended if we dare enjoy it and make the most of it while we're at it - all the while with hearts that is settled on Him no matter what. He did, after all come to give us life, and life abundantly, and I believe that it starts on earth, and continues into eternity with Him. How is that for ABUNDANT! So, knowing what we have to look forward to, whilst living in the here and now, God also calls us to make disciples - this is the way in which we share our enthusiasm and love for God AND heed our hearts desire to have as many people as we can join in sharing this wonderful life in eternity. In in the final analysis this fulfills the great commission in Matthew - so every dimension is covered - isn't God AWESOME in how he is ALL POWERFUL God, and yet, in all He is, He doesn't loose sight that we are just human; so HE incorporates our humanity and His UNLIMITED ETERNITY to achieve the end result that glorifies HIM - the only reason why we were ever created anyway. Isn't God great!! May you not be 'blinded' by Chris' boxes, but realize that your whole life is a journey (whether visible, or invisible), and not just a destination. Don't miss out on the 'scenery' along the way, but roll down the window every now and again and let your hair blow in the wind sometimes. God might just smile at you. So smile back.
