How Do You Pray?

One of the things I'm trying to do a better job with this year is making consistent time for prayer. I've always loved to pray. It's one of those experiences that makes the Lord so much more real in everyday life. When I can feel His presence and communicate with Him, my Christian walk becomes much more palpable, authentic and, frankly, easier.

I've always loved praying, but for some reason I've always struggled to find a daily time for it. I seem to find the time for Him either when I have the day off or when I really need His help. That's not the way to treat someone you love, much less the creator of the universe. "Yeah, God, I would talk today, but You don't understand how busy I am."

I'm sure that I'm not alone in this dilemma (or at least I hope I'm not). So I wanted to ask you, the fantastic New Man readers, for two things. First, how do you find the time to pray regularly? Second, what do you do when you are praying?

As to the second question, I've always found that the praise + thanksgiving + intercession + personal needs formula feels natural to me. I don't follow it every time—sometimes God takes me in different directions. But if I'm not "in the mood" to pray, this pattern works really well.

First, I try taking a few seconds of silence to calm my mind. Then I start to praise God. I praise Him for who He is, what He has created, and the amazing things He has done in my life.

This leads to thanksgiving. After acknowledging how good God is, I find that the things He has done for me (and in spite of me) always seem more amazing—and I want to thank Him for that.

Then I move to intercession, which is probably the most important part of my prayer time. Nothing will make you more loving to your neighbors than praying for them. Oswald Chambers once said, "Discernment is not a call to judgment, but to intercession." You really capture God's heart when you intercede for others.

Last comes prayer for my own life. This is crucial, because God wants me to bring my cares and concerns to Him. However, I'll say that they seem a whole lot different after I've been praying for others. Often by then, my own concerns don't feel like such a big deal.

So that's how I usually do it; but I love trying new things too. How do you pray? Do you have a certain technique or do you just let the Holy Spirit lead you. Also, how do you make time for regular prayer?

When it comes to daily prayer I have to schedule it. So I set my alarm 45 minutes before I need to shower and get dressed. I spend the first 15 min. reading the Psalms. If you read 5 a day, with Psam 119 on the 31st day(if needed) you can read through the book of Psalms in a month. Also, if I cannot get through more than 3 psalms in the morning, I will read the rest before I go to bed. Anyway, that gets my heart 'primed' to have an honest conversation with God. I will use what I have just read to pray for myself, my family and others.

I have to schedule it, too. I set my alarm to go off 8 hours ahead before i go to bed. When i wake up it is to a Christian music station, so i wake up to praise music. Then i brew my coffee, go to the bathroom. I spend about 20 minutes. i read a chapter or two from the Bible, write in my journal, then i pray. I pray the Lords Prayer if i don't feel burdened to pray for anything in particular. This is what i have done for the past 30 years. it has kept me out of much temptation as a never-married man in my late 40's.

This is such a inspiration that I think I will read more from this e magazine everyday! I also learned a little from a few of the other comments. I really also like that we can talk about it with other people that read this. wow

I also have to schedule prayer into my calendar and set reminders. I find that despite my earnest desire to take 5-10 minutes to pray at lunch time for example, I can get lost in the tasks of the day and never even think of praying. My calendar reminders help me greatly in that respect.

I have also started praying the Psalms the last few months. The Psalms are a great tool for prayer and they have made a huge difference in my prayer life. Praying a Psalm, or any scripture for that matter, helps prevent me from saying the same old thing every time. I also taped a little sheet of paper in my pocket testamemt that has all the Psalms in categories (from Tim Keller's Praying the Psalms bible study). This is awesome for me because since I always have my pocket testament with me, I can quickly reference a categorized based on what's on my heart at any given time.

My prayer has evolved into just coming into the presence of the Lord early in the morning. My advice to myself is just show up and shut up. I've found that the Lord will do all the heavy lifting if I just show up every morning. For me to encounter the Lord's presence in prayer I need to have solitude, silence, and my soul quiet. I just ask the Holy Spirit to baste me with the love of Jesus. Unfallingly that is just what happens. This type prayer life has led me into an intimacy with Jesus that I didn't even know existed! Praise the name of Jesus!

I have purchased a couple of inexpensive prayer devotionals. You can find them in any just about any Christian bookstore. They actually have a prayer or series of prayers each day that you can say and meditate on. I really like using this method because it allows me to mix up my prayers -- otherwise I tend to repeat the same things and Peter out quickly.

Most of the devotionals are sorted by topic, so if you're dealing with a particular issue you can go right to a prayer related to that topic.
