Tebow's Pro-Life Super Bowl Ad Takes Courage

Well, fellas, you've just been given another reason to watch the Super Bowl this year. If you haven't heard, Focus on the Family plans to air a pro-life ad featuring Tim Tebow during the big game. In it, the Heisman-winning quarterback and his mother, Pam, will share a personal story centered on the theme of "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life."

Though the ad hasn't aired, the assumption is that it will center on the story surrounding Tebow's birth. When Pam was pregnant with Tim in 1987, she contracted a dangerous infection. She was working as a missionary in the Philippines, and her doctors there recommended an abortion. Pam refused. Now this story is to get 30 seconds of prime-time exposure.

When I first heard about the ad, my initial reaction was, "Uh-oh, that might turn some people off." See, as a Christian (and a Gators fan), I like that everybody likes Tebow. He's the rare public figure who everyone—from the talking heads on TV to the average Joe on the street—can agree is good. The only thing opposing college fans could criticize him for was being too good.

That might change after the ad. By taking a public stance on arguably the most controversial issue in America, Tebow is going to open himself up to a lot of criticism. Pro-choice groups are condemning the spot, calling on CBS to remove it from the Super Bowl XLIV programming.

Of course, nobody has seen the ad yet. But I'm guessing there's no way pro-choice viewers are going to enjoy it. And if they don't, they're certainly not going to feel the same way about Tebow after the ad as they did before it.

However, as much as I'd prefer for everybody to keep liking Tebow, I'm blown away by his courage to stand up for what he believes in. Though he's never been secretive about his view on abortion, he's now blatantly announcing his view to the world by appearing on an advocacy commercial.

In doing so, he's not just risking his current popularity, he's also risking his potential income. How many corporate sponsors will endorse an athlete who goes out of his way to support a controversial opinion?

But here's the thing: The goal of a Christian man's life isn't to be liked by everyone. Jesus certainly wasn't. As Christian men, we are called to stand up for what we believe, speak truth and defend those who can't defend themselves. Certainly we have to balance this truth with love, but trying to avoid controversy altogether is not in the bag. It's the coward's way out.

During an interview with reporters in Mobile, Ala., on Sunday Tebow said, "I know some people won't agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe."

It worked for me. I have even more respect for Tebow than I had before. He knows he has a platform right now, and he doesn't know how long that platform is going to last, so he's using it to stand up for what he believes in.

I admire that.

What do you think?

My daughters attended the same HS as Tim. We know him. He is genuine, and while he is competitive and ultra-demanding on himself, he is not the least bit political.

More importantly, he is not judgemental.

There are issues worth standing up for, and there are stories worth telling. He deserves a lot of credit.

Way to go Tim...another wonderful opportunity for a man of God to take a stand for his beliefs and not worrying about the consequences. Choose you this day who you will serve!

let's not forget that for TT this is a personal story. That gives him the 100% right to stand for his beliefs on life (and not chalk that position up to "Oh he's a Christian of course he is pro-life"). I have an adopted daughter who was **almost** an abortion statistic and I am very proud of her unapologetic stance on abortion because for her ... it really is more just a faith position or opinion .. it's personal!

I am impressed with the courage that the Holy Spirit has given Tebow and I support him and his family. He's just doing what all christian men should do...MAN UP!

If we want to be true men of God we must stop being people pleasers and start being God pleasers.

We get so caught up in what other people think is right or wrong, when the only thing that really matters is what the Lord thinks is right or wrong.

I'm in the process of writing a motivational book and started writing it two years ago.

I will have my book complete by early summer 2010. My objective is to share some nuggets of truth with men all over the world. Many christian men need to MAN UP and take off the skirts and put on the full armor of God and go after Him.

It's great to see a young man like Tebow stand up for what he believes in without the cares of the world on his shoulders.

May the Lord Bless Tebow and his family. If he loses the worlds finances because of this, the Lord will replace it with a thousand fold. Amen and Amen.

Tim Tebow is a True Man of God.

The purpose of life is not to be liked or accepted. The purpose of life is to live!

Tebow is showing true life by speaking as he is compelled to speak and not weighing the consequences to his income or popularity.

I believe that it does not matter what the world think of you when you stand for what u believe in.
I also believe that no matter what
God will take care of Tebow and Tebow will play wherever God directs him to be.
I Salute tebow and his mom for standing true to what they believe in.

I'm actually surprised by your comment that you are "blown away by his courage to stand up for what he believes in"....are you really? I'm not. I think Tebow all along has shown that he is not willing to kowtow. I hope his personal set of values and his integrity holds up to the world he'll step into outside of the fishbowl life of college. It would be nice to see him stand on his beliefs going forward. And unless you buy into the whole prosperity thing....why should we be surprised that Tebow may be jeopardizing massive amounts of money in potential income? The gathering of lots of money and prestige doesn't appeal to everyone....and I don't think it's fair to assume that this is "a risk" for Tebow. If he cared about such things, he wouldn't take the stand that he does.

I think you misjudge all but the more extreme pro-choice individuals. Unlike you ASSUME, I too find it great that Tebow is sharing his personal story and beliefs and while I might disagree with the message I will enjoy watching it. And, I won't feel different about Tebow afterwards. I have friends on both sides of the issue and I don't like them less for their views. I was taught not to be judgmental or throw stones. To assume I would be and to generalize so broadly is perhaps a reflection of your own nature should the situation be reversed?

I salute the courage of Tim, one must be able to stand for what he believes in. I'm inspired by Tim's courage to stand for the truth, irrespective of the transient popularity and glory of the world. God is proud of you & I am. You are His ambassador indeed!

Let's not forget that CBS is being pressured to pull the TV ad. We need to go to CBS.com and encourage them to run the TV spot. At the bottom of their home page, click on 'User Feedback'. Let's also pray that they will not buckle under the pressure. Frankly, many people that normally wouldn't watch the Super Bowl, will now watch it to see the ad. It's a good marketing strategy.

I think that we need heroes in the kingdom, and Tim Tebow is one. Regretably even the best are subject to missteps. Tim has a public opportunity to speak-up and I am glad he is taking it. I just pray that he can bear the burden he is carrying and can keep his good witness, like Billy Graham has.

It is a blessing watching a young man that stand up for his belief. Our young people can learn so much about one man reveals his heart and love for Jesus. So often, we are faced with those Christian who can really stand up behind closed doors. But, when it seems to touch their career they back down or won't take a stand. This is what is special about this young man. His parents raised a godly man. I am a Seminole graduated. But, I really follow this young man this past football season. I was so impressed with the way he stood out with placing of his scripture under his eyes where all could see.. What a message to share with the world. Go forward young man. God has called you for such a time as this...
Continue on this journey, Many lives will be change. Isn't that our life is about? it is about being there for others. You are a living witness to that!
Be Blessed.
