Week One: Temptation Strikes
Dizzy. Shaky. Irritable.
That’s how I felt the first day on the diet. I kicked off my morning with three Omega 3 eggs, a grapefruit and a glass of water. At 10 am I dutifully downed my “Perfect Weight” shake. Lunch was a spinach salad with vinaigrette dressing.
You’d think I’d be happy.
Nope. My stomach knew something was amiss. Where was the McDonalds? Where were the carbs and sugar? I was getting enough to eat, so I wasn’t hungry. But I wasn’t happy. Maybe this was the “detox” I’d been warned about. I was worried that by week’s end I’d be pulling imaginary spiders off my face.
Yet over the next few days I began to feel better. My body was gradually getting accustomed to subsisting on strange new foods like salmon, broccoli and salad.
But then I was confronted with the first test of my newfound resolve. It didn’t come in the form that I expected—I guess it never does. It wasn’t the smell of Cinnabon wafting through the mall or the lure of Cold Stone Icecream. It was the sweet, soft voice of my wife. I had fallen asleep on the couch. When I awoke, she was standing over me, holding a tray of chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven.
“Honey, you’ve been doing so well. Just one won’t hurt.”
I had two.
The next day, I was feeling a little guilty but got right back on the horse with a Perfect Weight America shake for breakfast. That day I stepped on the scale: down 4 pounds. Not a bad week ... the cookies notwithstanding.

Hi!
Good for you, Drew! Some of us want to join you on your diet, but we don't know the principles behind it. Is it just no carbs or sugar? Do we have to buy the book?
Also we would like to see your real cholestral reading so we know if it helps-- that's a big part of our desire to follow your example.
Thanks
Chubby Family
I followed the link to Amazon, the book is not available yet. Pity.
I run, and in October "completed" a marathon. Didn't lose an ounce. My doctor is all over me because I have a BMI slightly higher than the yours Drew. Oh yeah, and I work out of my home.
margee,
Thanks for your question. Yes, the best way to do the diet is to buy the book. It lays out exactly what you should eat and it's not just a no carb diet. It has four phases and a whole philosophy behind it.
And if you really want to know my cholestral, here goes: 260. That's the bad cholestral. Brutal. I'm hoping this diet takes that down.
javajoe,
Wow! If you're running marathons, you're way ahead of me.
I have heard though that running long distance isn't always the best way to lose weight. Jordan Rubin, the author of Perfect Weight America, advises doing short, vigorous workout sessions.
The book doesn't actually release until Jan. 1, but you should be able to "pre order" one on amazon.
If you want to join me on the diet, please try again. I've already lost 8 pounds, so I highly recommend it!
I weighed about 280 at the beginning of this year and my my cholesterol is through the roof. I am ready to lose 100 lbs. I have officially joined you Drew. I am 35 yrs old with two young kids and adding another soon. I would like to see them grow up! Darren
Hi Drew,
I sincerely hope and pray you'll follow through on your challenge! You'll pay for it later if you don't. I wish I had dealt with it successfully when I was younger. Presently I'm also once more struggling to lose weight - have gone from 230 lbs. to 200 lbs. with a goal of 175-180 lbs.
By the way, have you heard of sleep apnea? This can be caused by being overweight and one of the indications is a problem with snoring.
I'll be watching to see how you do and will pray for you.
best wishes,
jake the nake
